Want to turn your 2015-2020 Escalade into an Escalade V?

Welcome to Project Budget Escalade V!

With pricing on the new Escalade V starting at $160,000 dollars, we think there are better ways to produce a nearly 700 horsepower Escalade for a lot less money!

The 2015-2020 Escalade can be purchased these days for a bargain price and comes with a 6.2L L86 V8 engine which is essentially the same  LT1 engine that powers the Camaro SS, Corvette and so on, outside of the truck intake manifold that produces more low end torque, which will be removed anyways. If you want to opt for the better 10 speed transmission, the 2018-2020 Escalades came with the 10l90.

So the question is how do we do it right? Well that answer is pretty straight forward actually.

The Magnuson Magnum TVS2650 Supercharger system.  This kit is said to give your Escalade a 45% increase in horsepower up to 640HP and 579 Ft-lb of torque at the crank without any additional modifications or tuning.

The canned tune Magnuson provides will certainly get you going, but leaves a lot to be desired, especially if you plan on additional modifications that we are going to get into and we are sure we can easily get these horsepower levels up to 700+HP if the desire is there with proper custom tuning.

Our goal here is to test the Escalade in various stages to provide accurate information regarding the differences in performance that can be expected at each stage and what will provide the most bang for your buck.

1) Stock baseline, Stock tuning

2) 93 octane Performance tune

3) Magnuson Supercharger installed, Magnuson off the shelf tune

4) Custom tuning, 93 octane

5) LT4 Injectors and LT4 HPFP, DSX flex fuel sensor installed Custom Flex Fuel Tuning, Ethanol blend

6) Throttle body upgrade, ported LT5 Soler Throttle body

7) Intake modification, 4 inch MAF tube, KN Black Filter

8) Smaller Pulley Upgrade

9) ????

Step 1: Baseline Dragy Data

Step 1: Baseline Dragy Data

Step 1: Baseline Dragy Data

The Project DIY Escalade was baselined in stock form, running pump 93 octane.

The results were about as expected, 14.62 1/4 mile at 94.25 MPH with a true 0-60 time of 6.49 seconds, or about a 6.3 0-60 with the 1 foot rollout the manufactures tend to go by.

Step 2: Magnuson Install

Step 1: Baseline Dragy Data

Step 1: Baseline Dragy Data

The install went very smoothly and could not ask for a better kit or instructions from Magnuson.  The instructions manual is extensive, detailed and full of color pictures to make the job easy enough for your average DIYer to tackle in their driveway over the weekend.

If you are looking for an installer, we have options in the northeast area that can help and work with us for tuning as well.

The bolt on kit is designed to work all stock components, stock fuel system and everything is included to get you up and running.

All hoses, clamps, bolts, and even a few tools were included.  Hoses were all wrapped very nicely as well.

I have seen and worked with other kits and I can really not stress enough how much better the quality of this Magnuson kit is, not to mention the blower is superiopr and makes more power on less boost than any other kit we have seen.

Step 3: First Start

Step 1: Baseline Dragy Data

Step 4: First Drive / Thoughts

After topping off the intercooler reservoir, letting the pump circulate to bleed out all the bubbles in accessory mode it was time to fire the truck up.  We flashed on Magnuson's provided base tune and everything went smoothly.  I wouldnt say there is anything wrong with Magnusons base ECM tune, but it is certainly going to be way on the conservative side and inefficient if you are looking to use the new found power as best possible but we will be baselining the truck with the included tune file to see the results to get a better idea how much performance is left on the table without a proper custom tune.

Step 4: First Drive / Thoughts

Step 4: First Drive / Thoughts

As expected, the Escalade's new found power is immediately noticeable when you put your foot down.  The truck accelerates briskly through the gears and up to triple digit speeds effortlessly now and seems to pull harder and harder as it gets moving.  Otherwise, driving the truck around at lower throttle positions feels like stock and there is not much noise to be heard from the super efficient Magnuson 2650 that is barely being worked out.  It is pretty obvious that the stock transmission tuning is "short shifting" the truck too early into the powerband now as it just wants to keep pulling into the higher rev ranges with the supercharger added.

The supercharger is producing 6-7 pounds fo boost with this setup, the fuel system seems to be holding up without issues, manifold aircharge temperatures are extremely consistent and flat when in boost which is amazing for this style of supercharger.

Magnuson provides an ECM tune only, which works, but at the same time, seems like it leaves a lot of performance on the table to me,  the stock engine is going to make its peak power pretty low in the RPM range, about 5,300 RPM, so the stock transmission calibration which shifts lower in the RPM range at full throttle works well with the stock engine however once the Magnuson supercharger is added to the engine and the truck manifold gets removed, this shifts the powerband up in the RPM range a lot, typically up and over 6,000RPM, so having a proper ECM and TCM tune that will work with this setup where it shines is going to make a big difference with this setup. The factory transmission tuning is going to have the car shifting far before the engine even see's peak power.  Whats the point of adding a supercharger and 200+Horsepower if the vehicle isnt going to use it properly?

Step 5: Dragy Testing With the Magnuson Base File

Step 5: Dragy Testing With the Magnuson Base File

We are running the kit as designed out of the box with no changes, stock 96MM pulley size, factory airbox, factory throttle body and using Magnusons ECM tune, on 93 octane.

Just for fun, using wallace racing calculator, it estimates a 6,600 lb race weight escalade should run roughly 14.59@93mph which is pretty close to our baseline figure.  If we keep the same 6600 lb weight and increase HP to Magnusons claimed 640HP, it spits out a 12.68@107MPH so it will be interesting to see how the Escalade does first with Magnuson's base tuning and then with our custom ECM and TCM tuning on the vehicle without changing anything on the vehicle outside of tuning.  My guess would be it under performs the estimated numbers on the base file.

I think there will be some surprising gains made just with custom tuning with this setup.  Our test vehicle is equipped with the 10 speed transmission, which likely will show even less of a difference than an 8 speed vehicle since the 8 speed would have an even worse drop off into the lower RPM ranges when short shifting than the 10 speed.

Step 6: Custom Schmidty Tuning

Step 5: Dragy Testing With the Magnuson Base File

Now that we have some baseline numbers it is time for us to custom tune the ECM and TCM to optimize the calibration, squeeze some more horsepower out of the engine safely as well as optimize the transmission tuning with quicker shifts and optimized shift points.

When it comes to building a performance car/truck, the details can really make or break the build which is why its important to have proper custom tuning done on the vehicle to get the most out of it.

We custom remote tune GM vehicles all over the world so working with us to get your Escalade tuned if you choose to go down this path is no issue, we sell everything that is need to get the job done.

Once we are done and happy with the results, we will go back and do some more testing with dragy to see the difference.
